Zegin Braun’s new barbecue joint is a nod to old family tradition.

It’s named after The Pour House, a popular Elmira nightspot run by his father, Erv Braun, in the late 1960s and early ’70s.

I’ve heard all kinds of wild stories from those days,” Braun said.

Erv Braun, a guitarist, banjo player and bandleader, would pack the place for live music, and at one point his kitchen served up a lavish seafood buffet for $3.75.

Zegin Braun’s venture will be a bit different. He says the menu will be a bit similar to a Dinosaur BBQ, referring to the popular Syracuse restaurant, but with more of a sports bar atmosphere.

“It’s a true smokehouse,” Braun said. “There’s really nothing around here like it.”

Behind the kitchen is a patio with a huge smoker, fired by a wood furnace and capable of slow-roasting 1,000 pounds of meat at a time.

Texas-style beef brisket, Kansas City-style ribs, and all kinds of smoked chicken will top the menu. There are side dishes such as baked beans and macaroni and cheese, along with burgers, wraps, soups and salads.
Braun, a lifelong Horseheads resident who grew up racing dirt bikes, has spent much of the past decade or so touring the country as an TV announcer for monster truck and motocross series.

“A lot of my recipes I picked up while I was traveling down South,” Braun said. “Some of the others are family recipes.”

For the thirsty, Braun has local beers from Horseheads Brewing Co. and other places on tap. He’ll serve hard liquor from Finger Lakes Distillery on Seneca Lake, and he’ll only serve Finger Lakes wines.
